From an idea born 40 years ago to a thriving outdoor gym in Birštonas

How one resident’s long-standing vision became a new outdoor fitness space for the community.

In Birštonas, Lithuania, a long-standing idea has finally become reality. Six Omnigym outdoor fitness equipment have been installed in Vytautas Jurgis Meška Park, giving residents and visitors a new opportunity to train, stay active and enjoy strength training outdoors.

What makes the project particularly inspiring is its story. The idea did not start with a new development plan or a recent fitness trend. It dates back several decades.

A vision that waited for the right opportunity

The project was proposed by Birštonas resident Stanislovas Martinaitis, who had been thinking about outdoor gym equipment for more than 40 years.

With a background in designing and building sports equipment himself, Martinaitis understood the potential of bringing quality training equipment into public spaces. Years later, seeing Omnigym equipment in nearby Druskininkai gave the idea a new impulse.

He saw an opportunity to create an outdoor gym that could serve a much wider range of people, from everyday exercisers and families to older adults and more experienced athletes.

The opportunity came through Birštonas’ participatory budgeting process. Martinaitis submitted his proposal, and after receiving strong support from local residents, the project was selected for funding.

Two years later, the idea had become reality.

Six equipment designed for different training needs

The new outdoor gym features six Omnigym machines, selected to train the major muscle groups, including the legs, back, and shoulders.

The location was carefully considered as well. Vytautas Jurgis Meška Park is a popular destination for both local residents and visitors to Birštonas, with a steady flow of people passing through the area.

Rather than placing the gym in an isolated sports area, the equipment is integrated into a space that people already use for walking, recreation and spending time outdoors.

This makes it easy to combine exercise with everyday activities, whether stopping for a short workout during a walk or planning a more structured outdoor training session.

The community response exceeded expectations

The first experiences with the equipment have been particularly encouraging.

According to the project’s initiator, the equipment attracted thousands of visits within just a few months. Usage data collected from the equipment indicated approximately 1,700 individual training sessions during the period.

The users have also represented a wide range of ages and fitness levels.

Children and families have discovered the equipment together, older residents have used it to support their strength and mobility, and more experienced exercisers have found opportunities for more demanding training.

This broad use is exactly what public outdoor fitness can offer: a shared training environment where people can exercise at their own level, without a membership or opening hours.

Making strength training more accessible

One of the key motivations behind the project was the importance of maintaining strength throughout life.

As we age, maintaining muscle strength becomes increasingly important for everyday mobility, balance and independence. Accessible outdoor exercise spaces can help make strength training a natural part of people's daily routines.

And accessibility is not only about age. A well-designed outdoor gym can bring together people with very different training backgrounds, from someone trying strength training for the first time to an experienced athlete looking for an additional training environment.

Omnigym equipment is designed for public spaces with this diversity of users in mind. The equipment combines the familiarity of strength-training machines with the openness and accessibility of an outdoor environment.

From a local idea to a long-term community asset

The Birštonas project is a great example of how a single idea can have a lasting impact when a community gets behind it.

What began as a vision more than four decades ago has now become a permanent outdoor fitness space used by residents and visitors alike.

For Omnigym, projects like this demonstrate the potential of outdoor gyms to become much more than collections of exercise equipment. When the location, equipment and needs of the community are considered together, an outdoor gym can become an active part of the public space, encouraging movement, social interaction and healthier everyday habits.

In Birštonas, one resident’s long-standing idea has become a gym for an entire community.
